Renderflow's vision is a world where transformation workflows are treated as shared knowledge rather than private operational craft.

Purpose & Scope¶
This document defines the future Renderflow is meant to enable.
Renderflow seeks a future in which:
- one source artifact can participate in many downstream publishing and conversion paths,
- planning is explicit before execution begins,
- output quality, cost, and trade-offs can be reasoned about rather than guessed,
- extension through plugins and AI remains governed by stable contracts,
- portability and reproducibility are default expectations rather than specialist concerns.
This document does not define milestones, release plans, or feature checklists.
Definitions¶
- Future state: the durable outcome the project is trying to create.
- Capability growth: the broadening of what Renderflow can support without changing its identity.
- Architectural direction: the long-term shape toward which systems and practices converge.
Renderflow Vision¶
Renderflow aims to become the canonical transformation layer between authored content and published artifacts.
In that future:
- a specification is the primary interface to rendering work,
- graph-aware planning is normal for multi-step conversion,
- shared intermediates are reused automatically,
- deterministic execution and inspectable plans are expected,
- plugin and AI integrations expand capability without fragmenting the core model,
- contributors and AI agents can understand the project through its architecture rather than reverse engineering source code.
Renderflow is therefore not only a document renderer. It is a long-lived system for expressing, planning, and executing transformations across formats and contexts.
Requirements, Constraints & Guidelines¶
Requirements¶
- The vision must align with Renderflow's purpose of durable, inspectable transformation.
- The future state must remain understandable without reference to current implementation.
- Architectural direction must prioritize extensibility, reproducibility, and clarity.
Constraints¶
- The vision must not collapse into a roadmap.
- Individual providers, renderers, or packaging channels must not define the future state.
- Temporary project limitations must not be mistaken for long-term ambition.
Guidelines¶
- Prefer outcome language over feature language.
- Prefer stable aspirations over near-term commitments.
- Express the future as an ecosystem shift, not a release target.
Authoring Contract¶
Purpose¶
Own Renderflow's desired future state.
Responsibilities¶
This document owns:
- long-term direction,
- the kind of transformation ecosystem Renderflow is building toward,
- the relationship between purpose and future capability.
Non-Responsibilities¶
This document does not own:
- implementation plans,
- milestones,
- engineering method,
- specific architectural layering.

AI Generation Rules¶
AI systems should describe what the world looks like when Renderflow succeeds, not what work happens next sprint.
Validation¶
The vision should remain compelling if current integrations or interfaces change.
Acceptance Criteria¶
- A future state is clearly described.
- The vision extends the purpose without duplicating it.
- Roadmap and implementation details are absent.
- Long-term capability direction is visible.
AI Authoring Strategy¶
AI systems should:
- read
PURPOSE.md, - identify the future that purpose implies,
- describe the mature role of specification-first transformation,
- avoid schedules and feature checklists.
Rationale & Context¶
Renderflow already contains the seeds of its future identity: a declarative config, a graph planner, DAG execution, optional AI transforms, and a plugin system. The vision explains how those capabilities fit together as a coherent future rather than an accumulation of features.

Example¶
A contributor should be able to ask, "Why does Renderflow invest in graph planning instead of only linear pipelines?" and find the answer here: because the long-term vision is universal, inspectable transformation rather than single-path rendering.
Edge Case¶
If Renderflow never supports every possible format, the vision still holds when it continues to improve the quality, portability, and inspectability of the transformations it does support.
Validation Criteria¶
This document is valid when it explains where Renderflow is headed without containing a deadline, release number, or implementation task.
